Award-nominated Hale Construction Makes Key Appointments

LABCAward-nominated Neath-based JG Hale Construction Ltd has appointed three key members to its team in order to consolidate the group’s ongoing expansion strategy.

The family-run company, which has been shortlisted in the national LABC industry awards; is forecasting a £26m turnover this year and has recently appointed a Development Officer, an Assistant Buyer and a Group Health and Safety Manager.

Stephen Griffiths joins Hale from the Coastal Housing Group; Mike Whelan is Hale’s new Group Health and Safety Manager, working across Hale Construction and sister companies Hale Homes and Seven Oaks Joinery and Chris Davies becomes Assistant Buyer bringing his extensive buying experience gained over 16 years with builders merchants Selco, as well as working for merchants LBS and Travis Perkins.

Hale currently has a workforce of 136 and has been influential across some of West Wales’ largest developments. The company has built up a leading reputation with its portfolio of award-winning private and social housing; care homes; retail and commercial developments and its outstanding understanding of client need and demand.

Hale’s £1.07m Tŷ Llew development at Waun Wen’s former St Mark’s Church in Swansea, has also been shortlisted for the grand final of the prestigious Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Building Excellence Awards, which were established 12 years ago to help raise standards in the construction industry.

Tŷ Llew recently won the Welsh title of the awards, which celebrate the construction industry with a focus on all vital elements in the creation of excellent buildings and technical innovation, sustainability and high performance.

On Hale’s progression to the national finals, LABC Awards Judge Peter Richards noted: Swansea is a vibrant, growing 21st Century City. We can all see the developments going on around us and it is good to know that the work of our Building Control Team in conjunction with Group Gwalia and Hale Construction has ensured that the building standards on this fantastic development are extremely high and achieve much more than just Building Regulation Compliance.”

Redevelopment of St Mark’s Church into affordable housing for not-for-profit housing provider, Gwalia Housing began in 2011 with Hale working with architects Dewi Evans Partnership.

Hale currently services most Welsh housing associations. Selected bluechip private clients are also integral to Hale’s client base, which incorporates a varied workload across South, Mid and West East Wales.

Mr Griffiths was Pembrokeshire Housing’s very first employee and became Coastal Housing Group’s Head of Development towards the end of his long-standing 22-year career there. He said: I will be focussing on projecting the capabilities and experience Hale benefits from. I specialise in site identification and site development in the private, social housing and commercial retail sectors and first dealt with Hale, when I worked for Swansea Housing and worked with them on their first public sector developments in Swansea, which were a mixture of flats and houses. We later worked together on much higher profile developments such as the prestigious £9.5m care home a Tŷ Twyn Teg and the Harlequin Court mixed development scheme on Windsor Road in Neath.

Mr Griffiths has extensive experience of liaising with Local Authorities, Registered Social Landlords and identifying future development sites and opportunities and added: I am glad to now be associated with a company like Hale that is locally based and has a strong ethos of supporting apprenticeships, which have been a bugbear within the construction sector for a number of years. Since the economic downturn, it has been harder for companies to offer apprenticeships schemes”

But JG Hale Construction has always been a very forward thinking company and a very ‘listening’ organisation with a strong focus on innovation. I very much look forward to my time here.”

Jonathan Hale, Managing Director at Hale Construction, said: We are delighted to welcome key members of staff on board to build on our existing success and reputation and view these new staff members as integral to ensuring our planned expansion strategy remains on course. This is a very exciting time for Hale Construction and Hale Homes and we are keen to ensure we have the right personnel in place to move forward with us into the future.

This recent shortlisting for the LABC Award – which is a leading title within the industry – is further testament to the premier team we have in place here and the exciting projects we are spearheading.

We have been fortunate to have been involved with Grŵp Gwalia on this project and have worked with them many times previously. The development has allowed us to continue our partnership in providing schemes of high quality with a distinctive design. Being a local construction company it gives us great pleasure to share in the awards and accolades with one of the area’s major social housing providers. It is a particular honour to now be shortlisted with some of the UK’s leading construction businesses in the national Best Social New Housing Development category. To win would be a huge accolade and testament to the quality and dedication of our growing team here at Hale.”
