Social housing that serves and preserves the local community
The Harlequin Court scheme provides stylish, durable and high quality social housing in central Neath. The build comprises 40 two bedroom flats, including six wheelchair adapted flats, together with three single occupancy flats.
Communal facilities include a lift to all floors, laundry room, a caretaking service to communal areas and grounds maintenance, together with CCTV security and remote door entry. The ground floor incorporates a supermarket and female fitness centre.
Harlequin Court occupies the site of the old cinema, and listed features from that building are preserved in the modern, cantilever design. The original stained glass windows remain a distinctive feature.
The site itself is restricted and inaccessible, sitting on the corner of a popular road and a narrow side street. Working with limited access and a strict remit to consider the local community, Hale organised the demolition of the previous building and a full material reclaim. Further innovative solutions include a steel-frame support.
To minimise congestion in the area, residents enjoy onsite underground parking.
